Commerce News: Microsoft is leading in IIoT platforms in the production and energy sectors

Recently our efforts in this industry have paid off. In two new IDC MarketScape reports examining current players in IIoT, Microsoft ranked as the leader in a well-filled field of global players, all of whom have mature and comprehensive offerings.

In both reports, Azure was recognized for the breadth of its current capabilities and was selected in the "Leaders" category in part because of its strategic roadmap. According to IDC MarketScape, Microsoft's comprehensive and flexible edge computing strategy, its large global installed base as well as its partner network and continued industry momentum were the platform's key strengths.

The reports also highlight the openness and flexibility of Azure offerings, highlighting the open source benefits of Azure IoT Edge, platform-independent reference architectures and global cloud availability.

This recognition is particularly appealing as it reflects exactly what we have done to drive the platform forward.

The manufacturing and energy sectors operate very differently and use the Internet of Things for many different reasons. In relation to energy, much of the value derived from the Internet of Things (IoT) is due to maximising the performance and lifetime of plant equipment. The introduction of the Internet of Things in manufacturing also focuses on assets. However, the Internet of Things in manufacturing emphasizes the efficiency of processes and supply chains. Companies in both industries are using the Internet of Things (IoT) to connect with customers and provide new and even more differentiated services.

The fact that we have been recognised in such tough competition between two very different industries underlines the direction we have taken in recent years. A decade ago, we were generally praising the Internet of Things and providing software that transferred information to edge devices and integrated it into a broader platform. We continue to do this today, taking a much more industry-specific approach.

As we continue to evolve and learn more about how the Internet of Things can help companies achieve new forms of value through their IT, our ability to support not only general IT, but also the specific requirements and circumstances facing companies in so many industries has grown. Everything we have learned from partners and customers in recent years has been realized or continued in the way we envisioned and developed the platform. These efforts are reflected in capabilities which meet today's business requirements for IoT solutions.

Our partners have also worked hard to develop their own skills and specializations. The result is an ever-growing portfolio of industry-specific end-to-end solutions supporting high-value processes and detailing specific functions for virtually every industry - with Azure IoT as the foundation.

All these factors have played a role in IDC MarketScape's ratings. In both reports, IDC MarketScape considered the full portfolio of offerings, including features, integration capabilities and deployment options. The company also considered each company's go-to-market capabilities, including ecosystem, adoption rates and pricing structures. It also considered each vendor's investment and know-how in the Internet of Things.

We are very pleased for being recognized as a leader based on this comprehensive assessment. Such recognition is always encouraging and at the same time a sign that we are on the right track.

The Internet of Things remains an emerging field which is currently experiencing an upswing on its way into the 2020s and beyond. The constancy in the ranks of the leading companies on IIoT will require further exploration and experimentation for us, for our partners and for our customers. One thing is certain: our commitment to continuous investment and cooperation to solve the complex technological problems of the manufacturing and energy industries.
