Smartstore and the orchestration, deployment, management and scaling of containers

What's Kubernetes?
Kubernetes, also known as "K8s", is an open source system which automates the deployment, scaling and management of container applications, originally designed by Google and donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Its aim is to provide a "platform for the automated provisioning, scaling and maintenance of application containers on distributed hosts". It supports a range of container tools, including dockers.

Kubernetes orchestration is supported by leading cloud platforms such as Microsoft's Azure, IBM's Bluemix, Red Hat's OpenShift, Amazon's AWS and Oracle's OCI.

What makes Kubernetes interesting for us as a medium-sized company at all?
Kubernetes services have become one of the most important differentiating factors of the Cloud Native portfolios of AWS, Google and Microsoft. For a medium-sized company it is an even more important competitive factor to have resources which support a fast pace of agile action on the market. Therefore, security and the location of servers in Germany are at the top of the list for start-ups and SMEs planning to outsource the operation of their IT architecture or other services, e.g. their own e-commerce application and to use modern applications. This turns your own IT infrastructure into a competitive factor.

Which Kubernetes services does Smartstore support?
We would describe Smartstore as Kubernetes agnostic technology, so it doesn't matter if you want to use Microsoft's Azure, IBM's Bluemix, Red Hat's OpenShift, Amazon's AWS or Oracle's OCI. However, we prefer the Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) services by Microsoft.

Do I have to buy one of the Smartstore Editions for Kubernetes?
Yes and No. If you want to use Smartstore in a Kubernetes environment (e.g. Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)) you can of course also use our Community Edition, but if you intend to run enterprise processes such as distributed applications in a web farm, our Enterprise Commerce Edition is the right choice for you.

How much effort does it take to install Smartstore using Microsoft Azure?
Smartstore is an app on the Azure Marketplace and can be installed as a cloud application with a simple click in just 10 minutes.
