Cash Rounding: Round invoices correctly

Broken prices like 3.99 euros for a kilo of apples are commonplace and normal for consumers in most countries. Those who pay with 4 euro coins in cash will receive one eurocent as change.

Rounding is a matter for the countries

But this does not exist everywhere in the world. For example, in Dutch supermarkets, change is often given out on 5 eurocents, although there are still 1- and 2-cent coins.

Some countries, for example, require their businesses to round up the total amount of an invoice or round down if the payment is made in cash.

In Switzerland, the "five-rappen rounding"has been in place for many years. 1- and 2-rappen coins are no longer in circulation here as a legal tender.

There is then the added problem that sales taxes must also be calculated correctly if 1-cent amounts cannot be paid.

All conceivable rounding rules are supported out-of-the-box in Smartstore. All the more important, because more and more rounding is also becoming a European issue.

European rounding rules 2021

At the beginning of 2020, the EU Commission published the work program. 2020. In Annex II and under the heading "An Economy That Works for the People," item 34, "Uniform Rounding. Rules" proposed:

"Evaluate the use of one- and two-cent coins and the possibility of introducing common rounding rules. One possible proposal would establish common rounding rules to address challenges associated with the use of one and two-cent coins."

At the moment, a public feedback round is taking place, in which anyone can participate online, until January 11, 2021.

Basically, this means that the EU Commission plans to withdraw one- and two-cent coins from circulation.

Solution built into Smartstore

Each store in Smartstore can be configured to round the total amount of invoices or receipts for cash payments. Per currency, rounding can be set individually.

Multiple rounding rules are available, as shown in the screenshot. This means that Smartstore store operators are already well positioned when it comes to rounding.
